VueScan 9.5.65

Hamrick Software heeft versie 9.5.65 van VueScan uitgebracht. Het programma kan worden gebruikt als vervanger van de bij scanners meegeleverde twain-drivers en biedt vaak meer instelmogelijkheden. In veel gevallen kan het programma ook scanners aansturen als de fabrikant zelf geen driver voor het desbetreffende besturingssysteem heeft uitgebracht. Naast scannen kan het ook enkele bewerkingen uitvoeren, zoals crop, sharpen, grain reduction en het aanpassen van de kleurbalans. VueScan is beschikbaar voor Windows, macOS en Linux, en biedt ondersteuning voor ruim 2400 scanners onder Windows, ruim 2100 onder macOS en 1900 onder Linux. Daarnaast is er ondersteuning voor de raw-bestanden van 600 digitale camera's. Het programma is te gebruiken in 28 talen, waaronder het Nederlands. In deze uitgave zijn de volgende veranderingen en verbeteringen aangebracht:

SUMo 5.1.0

KC Softwares heeft versie 5.1.0 van SUMo uitgebracht. SUMo, wat voor Software Update Monitor staat, is een programma dat de computer scant op aanwezige software en vervolgens controleert of er nieuwere versies beschikbaar zijn. Door het installeren van een driver agent kan het ook controleren op nieuwe drivers. De gratis uitvoering laat alleen weten van welke programma's er een nieuwere versie beschikbaar is, het downloaden van de update en het bijwerken is iets wat je verder zelf handmatig uit moet voeren. Hierdoor is het vooral handig voor mensen die zelf controle willen houden over welke updates ze wel of niet willen installeren. Het standaardinstallatieprogramma bevat een optionele advertentiemodule, maar er zijn ook een lite- en een portable-versie beschikbaar waar deze niet in zit. Sinds versie 5.0.11 zijn de volgende veranderingen en verbeteringen doorgevoerd:

Issues with Heroku GitHub Deploys

We are investigating issues with Heroku GitHub Deploys and builds with custom buildpacks stored on GitHub. More information may be available at GitHub's status site.

Resolved: Dashboard metrics availability

From November 29 19:43 UTC until November 30 08:00 UTC, our Common Runtime customers experienced a complete loss of routing logs in Heroku Dashboard. We accept full responsibility for any problems arising from this issue and apologize for negative effects our customers experienced.

Here is some additional detail about what happened and steps we are taking to mitigate future outages of a similar nature.

Who was affected?

All applications on the common runtime relying on Heroku Dashboard for routing metrics and logs have experienced a partial to complete log loss for about 12 hours.

All other types of logs or other destinations, such as custom drains or logging add-ons, were not impacted.

What Happened?

In an attempt to gain more clarity in lossy and old parts of our logging pipeline related to routing services, we have planned to replace parts of the system by a newer implementation that could more easily let us track degradations of service and find issues with log loss.

The deployment of the new components progressed well over an extended period of time, during which we monitored log loss end to end and saw no negative impact. Current monitoring covers general log delivery through the Heroku CLI, and all types of drains and add-ons customers can have. Unfortunately, the monitoring during the deployment did not cover Heroku Dashboard's consumption of metrics.

The deployment introduced a change in the timestamp format that was not accepted by Heroku Dashboard and resulted in log lines being rejected.

What did we do to prevent wider impact?

The deployment was rolled back as soon as we were aware of the issue and Heroku Dashboard metrics were re-established.

What will we do to mitigate problems like this in the future?

Following deployments have been done after correcting the log line format, and while adding Heroku Dashboard to the list of components monitored during code changes to the logging pipeline.

The change has fully been rolled out without further problems and should now let us provide a higher success rate in reporting routing logs to individual applications.

Resolved: Routing availability

On November 28 between 21:21 UTC and 22:00 UTC, our EU customers experienced partial HTTP traffic failures and increased latency. During this time, some apps in the EU were unable to receive HTTP requests. We sincerely apologize for the problems this caused.

Here is some additional detail about what happened and steps we are taking to mitigate future outages of a similar nature.

Who was affected?

Some applications in the EU experienced degraded HTTP availability and increased latency for around 40 minutes. During this time web and worker dynos continued to run, but web dynos were unable to receive some of their intended HTTP requests.

What Happened?

A number of of instances of our routing infrastructure in the EU region of the Common Runtime were overloaded due to a previous incident which caused their memory to be exhausted and were underperforming. Once the overloaded condition was detected we restarted these nodes in a rolling manner.

During the memory exhaustion and subsequent restarts, these routing instances were unavailable for our customers and requests in flight may have been interrupted.

What did we do to prevent wider impact?

This issue was limited to our EU region and to a subset of customer’s inbound requests. We had scaled up our routing fleet before the weekend to absorb any additional traffic from the US holidays.

Once we detected the degraded service, we took over our system’s normal recovery process and expedited the restart of nodes manually; each manual restart was made with a reduced impact on availability and faster than just letting the automated system handle the failures.

What will we do to mitigate problems like this in the future?

We are implementing new monitoring that can detect the specific memory exhaustion pattern we encountered and enable new alerting and response processes for this condition. Normally this is self correcting, but can cause our overall capacity to be reduced during the normal resolution.

Our new procedure for resolving this memory condition will be more aggressive than previously.

Resolved: Logging availability

On November 28 between 13:30 UTC and 21:00 UTC, our customers experienced a higher routing log loss rate than usual on the Common Runtime. We accept full responsibility for any problems arising from this issue and apologize for negative effects our customers experienced.

Here is some additional detail about what happened and steps we are taking to mitigate future outages of a similar nature.

Who was affected?

Customers in all regions of the common runtimes may have been affected, although the higher log losses have been felt in EU. Any application receiving traffic may have silently lost routing logs during that period of time.

What Happened?

A number of of instances of our routing infrastructure in the EU region of the Common Runtime were overloaded due to a previous incident which caused their memory to be exhausted and were underperforming for an extended period of time.

During this period of time, a section of our logging pipeline in which we had little visibility would silently drop logs. The rest of the logging pipeline being fully monitored reported no significant loss, which made automated detection ineffective for this specific issue and took a longer time than usual to confirm the true nature of the problem.

The lost logs could not be recovered.

What did we do to prevent wider impact?

Once we detected the degraded service level on the routing instances, we took over our system’s normal recovery process and expedited the restart of nodes manually; the added capacity allowed the part of our logging system dedicated to routing logs to avoid shedding logs to such a large extent.

What will we do to mitigate problems like this in the future?

We have already deployed a replacement for the faulty section of the logging infrastructure dedicated to routing logs so that their level of lossiness can be monitored at all times, and transmitted more efficiently.

With the new monitoring in place, such issues should not take place anymore and our response time to them will be much faster.

Issues with apps running with Docker registry

Applications that are deployed using the container registry are seeing issues with booting up processes (e.g. web dynos are not booting up, heroku run bash fails). This includes cycling dynos for running apps. Our Engineers are investigating.

Issues with Heroku Data metrics logs

Engineers are investigating an issue preventing Postgres metrics logs and Redis metrics logs from being sent to customer log streams. This does not affect Postgres or Redis databases themselves.
